Weighing less than two pounds and boasting an impressive Pentium® 120 processor, the Toshiba Libretto handheld computer is the key to the system's portability. It makes HIMSplus the system that goes to the warehouse with you, so inventory counts are more complete and consistent. "Before, you couldn't add unexpected inventory items on the fly," said Virginia Hardin, a product manager at CBORD. "Now, if you find an item in a different pack size or a single item usually stored by case, you can add it right there, with no problem at all."

HIMSplus also allows for more consistent and complete training, an advantage over other handheld inventory systems. "There's just one system on both the desktop and handheld computers," Hardin explained. "There is more consistency during training."

Transferring information to the desktop or network is easier than ever before, thanks to the system's infrared port. Once inventory is complete, the infrared port transfers information with a click of the built-in mouse—without the need for cables. "All you need to do is aim the infrared port, press a button, and the transfer is complete," Hardin said.

The palmtop PC is so powerful that many users find they can fit additional desktop applications on the system, simplifying integration with third-party reporting programs. "Many users say the palmtop is more powerful than their own desktop systems," Hardin said. "It's just an added advantage that this system offers."
